Generally, pigs are considered livestock or farm animals and are usually allowed in agricultural zones. In residential zones, however, there are restrictions on pig ownership. To determine whether pet pigs are legal in your area, contact your local animal control office or review your city animal ordinances online. Meanwhile, I've listed below eleven Arizona cities wherein you can legally own a pet pig.
Tucson, AZ
Under certain conditions, you can legally own a pet pig in Tucson, Arizona. Tucson City Code allows as many as 3 mini pigs per household. However, only registered purebred miniature Vietnamese potbelly pigs are allowed. According to the city code, your mini pig must not measure more than 23 inches in height. You may not keep more than 3 mini pigs in your household.
Phoenix, AZ
The conditions under which you may own a pet pig in the city of Phoenix are similar to those in Tucson. Phoenix's municipal code permits no more than 3 purebred miniature Vietnamese potbelly pigs or other similar purebred miniature pigs per household. Your miniature pig must not exceed 125 pounds in weight. You are required to keep your pet pig in a sanitary condition and not allow it to run at large.
Mesa, AZ
The keeping of Vietnamese pot-belly pigs or similar miniature varieties of swine as pets is permitted in the City of Mesa, Arizona. The City's municipal code requires your pet pig to stand 21 inches at the withers and weigh less than 200 pounds. The maximum number of mini pigs allowed per household in Mesa is two.
Gilbert, AZ
In Gilbert, AZ, Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs are classified as exotic animals and are allowed to be kept as pets within the town limits. If the pot-bellied pig lives with you in your home and yard as a domestic pet, it is permitted. The Town Code prohibits keeping exotic animals, including pot-bellied pigs, under unsanitary conditions. Upon complaint of any neighbor residing within 200 feet of your residence, and upon confirmation by an animal control officer, your pet pig may be removed and you may no longer be permitted to keep a pig at your residence.
Tempe, AZ
In Tempe, AZ, pot-bellied pigs are classified as "small animals," the keeping of which is allowed in all residential districts having single-family dwellings. By ordinance, a maximum of 2 pot-bellied pigs is allowed per individual lot. To exceed this limit, you need to apply for and obtain a Use Permit. The ordinance does not allow the keeping of pot-bellied pigs in a manner that constitutes a nuisance.
Goodyear, AZ
Potbellied pigs are considered household pets in Goodyear, Arizona. The City Code allows no more than 4 household pets per residential property. Of the 4 household pets, no more than one may be a potbellied pig (not to weigh more than 100 pounds).
Buckeye, AZ
In Buckeye, AZ, you may keep dogs, cats, and miniature pigs in any combination not exceeding 4 in total in your house. Per Buckeye's Development Code, any premises where 5 or more domestic animals, including dogs, cats, miniature pigs, or any combination thereof over five months of age are kept is deemed a kennel, which requires a permit or license.
Yuma, AZ
Yuma's municipal code allows up to 3 purebred miniature Vietnamese potbellied pigs per household. The city also allows the keeping of other similar registered purebred miniature pigs as pets. However, you must see to it that your miniature pigs do not exceed 100 pounds in weight.
Casa Grande, AZ
The keeping of miniature Vietnamese potbellied pigs or other similar purebred miniature potbellied pigs as pets not exceeding 100 pounds in weight is allowed in Casa Grande, AZ. Casa Grande's municipal code requires all potbellied pigs over four months of age kept in the city to be licensed and registered. By ordinance, no more than three licensed potbellied pigs are permitted per household.
Prescott, AZ
Pet pigs are allowed within the city limits of Prescott, AZ. By ordinance, the number of pet pigs you may own is limited to two, each of which must not exceed 100 pounds in weight. According to the city's animal ordinance, the keeping of pet pigs must not annoy or disturb the peace, comfort, or health of the neighborhood.
Apache Junction, AZ
The City of Apache Junction allows residents to have up to 3 pet potbellied pigs, each of which must be licensed upon reaching the age of 4 months. Potbellied pigs must be kept only as pets or as show animals, not for purposes of retail sales or commercial breeding. Apache Junction's animal ordinance prohibits all potbellied pig owners from allowing their animals to be at large.
