Can You Own a Pet Pig in Alabama?

Whether or not you can own a pig as a pet in Alabama depends on where you live. That's because Alabama state law does not address domestic pig ownership. However, the city or county in which you reside may have its own rules regarding pig ownership. To determine whether pet pigs are legal in your city, check with your local Animal Control or animal ordinances. Meanwhile, I've put together a list of nine Alabama cities where it's legal to keep a pig as a household pet.

Gadsden, AL

You can own a pet pig if you reside in Gadsden, Alabama. The City's Animal Ordinance permits residents to keep registered purebred miniature Vietnamese potbellied pigs or other similar registered purebred miniature pigs as pets within the city limits. Per the city code, your mini pig must not weigh more than 125 pounds. Also, it must not be taller than 18 inches. You must have your pet spayed or neutered upon reaching maturity. In addition, your mini pig must undergo a blood test to show it is free from pseudorabies. You must keep your mini pig as a pet, not as a food source. Lastly, you may not own more than 2 mini pigs.

Daphne, AL

In Daphne, Alabama, pot-bellied pigs are considered "Domesticated animals," which may be kept as pets. Per Chapter 4 of the city's Code of Ordinances, it's unlawful to permit your pet pig to be at large at any time within the city. When found at large, your pet pig will be seized by a police officer who will confine the animal to the City of Daphne Animal Shelter. Within 7 days after your pet is impounded, you may redeem it by paying the city $25 for impounding and $4 per day for the care of the animal.

Pleasant Grove, AL

In Pleasant Grove, AL, you may keep a pig as a pet under certain conditions. The City Code requires all places and premises where pigs are kept to be kept clean, sanitary, and free of noxious odors. In addition, such places or premises must be maintained in such a manner as will effectually prevent the reproduction of flies or disease vectors.

Foley, AL

You may keep pot-bellied pigs as pets in the city of Foley, AL. By ordinance, you're prohibited from allowing your pet pig to run at large. As a pig owner, your premises must be free from unsanitary droppings, refuse, and odors. You're required to provide your pet pig with adequate shelter from the elements if the animal is kept outside. Unless when walking or training your pig, you must not restrain it with a restraining device less than 6 feet long.

Albertville, AL

In the City of Albertville, Alabama, you may own a pet pig, provided you meet a specific requirement. According to the City Code, it is unlawful for you to keep a pig in the city unless the animal is at all times kept 300 feet or more from any residence other than your residence. Having complied with this requirement, premises where pigs are kept must at all times be kept in a sanitary condition.

Muscle Shoals, AL

You may keep a Vietnamese pot-bellied pig as a household pet in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. As a pet pig owner, you're required by ordinance to exercise proper care and control of your animal to prevent it from becoming a public nuisance.

Alexander City, AL

The keeping of Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs as a household pet is permitted in Alexander City, Alabama. The City Code requires pet pot-bellied pigs to be kept in a sanitary manner.

Valley, AL

In Valley, Alabama, pigs are considered by ordinance livestock, the keeping of which is only permitted in the FAR (Forestry-Agriculture-Recreation) and RR (Rural residential Districts).

Southside, AL

It is legal to own a pet pig in Southside, AL. Per the City Code, you must not keep your pig within 150 feet of any school, church, hospital, public building, public park, or playground within the city limits. However, you're permitted to keep your pig within 150 feet of your residence if kept within a clean structure.
