How Many Pets (Dogs/Cats) Can You Own in Georgia, USA

A white kitten and a white puppy

The number of pets you can legally own in the state of Georgia ain't regulated at the state level. Instead, it is typically regulated at the local level (by individual cities or counties). Therefore, where you reside within the Peach State will determine the maximum number of pets you can legally own.

To determine the allowable number of pets in your area, I recommend giving your local animal control office a friendly call. Alternatively, you may also search for your city or county's animal ordinance online. Meanwhile, I have listed below a few Georgia municipalities and the allowable number of dogs and cats in them.

Columbus

In Columbus, GA, you may own five dogs or cats, or any combination thereof not exceeding 5. If wish to exceed that number, a private/hobby kennel permit is required. But before the permit is issued, there will be a $100 inspection and permit fee.

There is also a requirement of obtaining a certificate of occupancy from the code enforcement officer. Furthermore, there is a requirement for rabies vaccination and registration of dogs and cats. For additional info, please refer to Chapter 5 of the Columbus Code of Ordinances.

Savannah

In Savannah, GA, a maximum of 8 cats is allowed per single-family residence. Surprisingly, I couldn't find any restriction on the number of dogs in the City's Animal Control Ordinance. But there are restrictions on dogs running at large. All dogs and cats four months of age or older are required by ordinance to be vaccinated and licensed.

South Fulton

The city of South Fulton allows residents to own 3 dogs without a permit. However, a special permit is required to own four or more dogs within the city limits. The permit is issued by the city manager. With it, you may own up to five dogs.

If you are a cat person in South Fulton, you may own up to 5 cats without a permit. Animals you can own in South Fulton other than dogs and cats include but are not limited to rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, and chickens. Refer to the South Fulton Code of Ordinances for more info.

Sandy Springs

The maximum number of dogs and cats that may be kept on any single premises in Sandy Springs is 10, with a maximum of 3 dogs. For example, you may own 7 cats and 3 dogs. To own more than 3 dogs, you are required by city ordinance to obtain a permit from the city manager.

Roswell

In Roswell, GA, there is a limit of 3 dogs per household, but there is no limit on cats. If you wish to own more than 3 dogs in the city, a hobby kennel is required. You may obtain the permit from the Fulton County Animal Control Department. But before you are issued the permit, you must meet certain requirements, which are outlined in the city's Code of Ordinances.

Warner Robins

The maximum number of dogs and cats allowed per residential lot in the city of Warner Robins is six. For example, you may own six dogs or six cats, three cats and three dogs, or any combination of both animals not exceeding 6 in total. This limitation, however, does not apply to a litter of kittens or puppies under the age of twelve weeks.

It also does not apply to residential lots of five or more acres. Unless you obtain an unaltered animal permit, you are required by the City Code to spay or neuter your dogs or cats six months of age or older.

Are any dog breeds banned in Georgia?

At the state level, no specific dog breeds are banned or restricted in Georgia. At the local level, however, many cities have local bylaws restricting certain breeds in their Code of Ordinances. For instance, the city of Marietta's Code bans Pit Bulls and Rottweilers from dog parks and off-leash areas.

In College Park, GA, the following dog breeds are classified as "potentially dangerous:" Pit bulls, Rottweilers, Dobermans, and German Shepherds. As such, these breeds of dogs are required by city ordinance to be registered.

Another Georgia city that has restrictions on Pit bulls is Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald's municipal code declares Pit bulls "Dangerous Dogs." Consequently, Pit bull owners in the city are required by law to at all times keep their dogs securely confined indoors or in a securely enclosed and locked pen.
